AC/DC is an Australian rock band formed in 1973 and made up of brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. The band has been linked to heavy metal and hard rock, even though they have considered their music to be rock n roll. They have been ranked in the top ten on lists like VH1s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and MTVs Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time.
The band released their debut album High Voltage in 1975 followed by Powerage in 1978. Months before recording Highway to Hell, lead singer Bon Scott died in 1980 after a night of alcoholic abuse. The group considered breaking up but continued at the urging of Scotts parents and chose Brian Johnson as their new vocalist.
For Those About to Rock, We Salute You became number one in the U.S. The band lost popularity in the 90s after firing drummer Phil Rudd in 1983. Their popularity resurfaced in the early 90s with the album The Razors Edge.
Since AC/DC released 16 albums totals, the band has become one of the bestselling bands of all time with 200 million albums sold worldwide. Their album Back in Black is the highest selling album of all time (next to Michael Jacksons Thriller) with 49 million units.
