Avril Lavigne is a pop singer-songwriter from Napanee, Canada, who signed her first record deal with Arista at age 16. A year later, she entered the music scene with the release of her debut album Let Go in 2002. Let Go instantly turned Lavigne into an international pop star who became the youngest female solo artist to reach number one in the UK. She has pursued careers in acting along with designing clothes and perfumes.

Lavigne s debut went four times platinum and has sold 16 million copies by 2009. Complicated, her most successful single, reached number one in many countries in addition to the album. She released the sophomore album Under My Skin in 2004.

Lavigne changed her image to a more free, bubblegum pop sound for her third album The Best Damn Thing released in 2007. This was her third number-one album to show up on the UK Albums Charts. Many of her fans admired the new turning point that Lavigne was taking in her life while others were dissatisfied with the more polished/pop route that Lavignes music had taken.

Lavigne has had five number-one hits beside Complicated: Sk8er Boi, Im With You, My Happy Ending, and Girlfriend. She released her fourth album Goodbye Lullaby in early 2011.
