British singer-songwriter Jay Sean is a unique addition to the R&B scene. He has achieved international stardom and become one of the first few British-Asian crossover artists. He was born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti in London and developed his rapping talents at age 11 before crossing over to R&B, in part because his Indian background would have made it hard for him to break into British rap. In 2003, Sean signed to 2Point9, an entertainment company with British Asian artists like Rishi Rich, and released his first recording album with its first single Dance with You (Nachna Tere Naal). The song featured producers Rishi Rich and Juggy D and reached number 12 on the UK singles chart.
Soon enough, Virgin Records approached Sean with a record deal. He was currently studying to be a doctor at Queen Marys School of Medicine and Dentistry and dropped out. His 2004 debut album Me Against Myself reached a Top 30 spot on the UK charts with the Top Ten hits Eyes on You and Stolen. The album reached even bigger status in India where it received multi-platinum success in part because of Seans role in the 2005 Bollywood film Kya Kool Hain Hum. Amidst his success, Virgin Records dropped him and he released his 2008 sophomore album My Way independently through 2Point9. This album reached number six on the UK charts. In 2009, Sean signed with the Cash Money label and released the track Down, featuring Lil Wayne, which would land on Sean’s All or Nothing album later that year. He plans to release his fourth album Freeze Time in 2011.
