Jay-Z is a highly recognized artist in rap music who has worked to become the
number one rapper in New York City for a long time. His 1996 debut album
Reasonable Doubt sold millions and set off his long line of hit singles that would
receive extensive recognition on radio and television. He built up a solid fan base
and challenged other rappers, including Nas. He started Roc-A-Fella Records in
1996, a label that made a lasting influence on the hip hop and started many trends
from the 90s to the 2000s. He worked with the most well-known producers of the
day like Teddy Riley and Timbaland and collaborated with the most successful
rappers like DMX, Notorious B.I.G., and Snoop Dogg.
He announced his retirement from rapping in 2003 and became the president of
Def Jam label. He came out of retirement in 2005 in order to perform in the I
Declare War concert alongside Kanye West, Diddy, and T.I. He left retirement for
good and released Kingdom Come in 2006. He released another album American
Gangster the next year, then released Blueprint 3, the third album in the Blueprint
series. The latter album featured collaborations with Rihanna, West, and Alicia
Keys. The Hits Collection, Vol. 1 was released in 2010.
