Johnny Cash was considered as one of the most influential and imposing figures in the country music scene after the World War II. He was able to create a basic and very distinctive sound through his deep and resonant baritone and spare as well as his percussive guitar. He did not sound like Nashville at all, nor like rock & roll or honky tonk. He was able to create his own subgenre, which fell halfway between the rebelliousness of rock & roll and the emotional honesty of folk combined with the world weariness of country.
