Metallica was undoubtedly the best and the most influential of the heavy metal bands during the 1980s. The group was able to expand the limits of thrash, through the use of speed and volume in enhancing their intricately structured compositions. Their 1983 release Kill 'Em All became a sign that heavy metal's underground is becoming more accepted, which brought new complexity as well a depth to thrash metal.
