M.I.A. is the stage name of Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, a British artist, songwriter, vocalist and record producer. In 2002, she was already considered as an accomplished visual artist and in 2004, her singles "Galang" and "Sunshowers" became popular on the Internet. Her compositions encompass various genres, usually with political lyricism and artwork. A graphic designer, she also provided artwork and photography for various releases. She directed music videos and also tried experimenting in documentary film. She founded N.E.E.T, a record label.
