football in the U.S. It began as the American Professional Football Association
in 1920 with eleven teams and changed its name to the NFL in 1922. The league
includes thirty-two U.S. teams. Each team is only allowed 53 members with 45
being allowed to play each week during the season. The NFL has two conferences,
the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference with four
divisions each and four teams within each division.
The NFL consistently has the largest attendance per game than any other sports
league. The regular week contains seventeen weeks during which the teams play
sixteen games with one bye week. The season starts on the first week of September
and runs every week from December to January. At the conclusion of the season,
six teams from each conference take part in the NFL playoffs, which is a single-
elimination tournament that ends with the Super Bowl. This game is a widely
watched event that is hosted in a pre-selected city. It is often the most watched
show of the year. The leagues all-star game, The Pro Bowl, is usually held the
weekend following the Super Bowl.
