Multinational corporation Nintendo is a video game company based in Japan. The word Nintendo is Japanese for leave luck to heaven. Founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi, the company began making handmade hanafuda cards, and even tried businesses like a love hotel and a cab company, before it began developing video games. Nintendo is now of the most popular influences in video games today with a value of more than $85 billion. By 2010, the corporation sold more than 565 million hardware units and more than 3.4 billion software units. Nintendo ventured into the video game industry beginning in 1974 when the company secured distribution rights for the Magnavox Odyssey game console. Nintendo made its own hardware by 1977, released EVR Race for the video arcade industry, and released Donkey Kong in 1981, which would helped change its future. The game, designed by Miyanmonto, brought about great wealth for Nintendo. In 1983, the company launched the Nintendo Entertainment System along with a collection of titles, including super Mario Bros, which has become one of the best-selling video games ever created. The Game Boy handheld console was released in 1989 followed by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System with a 16-bit 4th generation console, which competed fiercely with the Sega Genesis console. Super Nintendo managed to outsell the Genesis console. The next console, Nintendo 64, was released in 1996 with 3D graphics and multiplayer options. GameCube nd Wii followed in the 2000s. To this day, Nintendo still operates as the oldest video game console maker.
