Owl City is a synthpop music project created by Adam Young in 2007, who had also created the projects Port Blue and Sky Sailing. Young started out loading trucks through bouts of insomnia in Owatonna, MN, and made a switch toward composing music. A singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he posted his material on MySpace where his music gained viral popularity and prompted him to sign a record deal. Young is influenced by disco and European electronica and Owl City is a blend of indietronica and alternative styles. Owl City made its first release with the 2007 independent EP Of June, which became number 20 on Billboard Electronic Albums. The next year, his second release Maybe Im Dreaming reached the number 16 spot. Young signed with Universal Republic and achieved mainstream attention with his debut album Ocean Eyes, which was released on iTunes in 2009. The album went to number 27 on Billboard 200 and went gold later that year. Fireflies hit the tops of the charts in U.S. and Canada, including Billboard Hot 100. Citys album spawned two other singles Umbrella Beach and Vanilla Twilight. Owl City has toured with John Mayer and has contributed material to the Soundtrack 90210 and the Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland soundtrack.
